The invasion force consisted of 59 U.S., British, and Canadian convoys, guarded by 5 battleships, 23 cruisers, 104 destroyers, and 200 minesweepers. A total of more than 700 warships escorted the armada. The 2,500 landing craft that hauled the men to the beaches were carried or towed by 2,727 support ships. From the air, more than 1,000 transports and towed gliders deposited 20,000 Airborne troops behind enemy lines.
